Jab I met Shahrukh Khan

"Is it really true?" I thought. "Am I really meeting SRK?" But yes it was true. I got to meet SRK and witness the shoot of BYJUs latest ad thanks to my husband. SRK was literally not even 100 metres away from me during the shooting. But given the rules and the silence that is to be maintained, we were not allowed to meet him during the shooting. We could just watch from a distance. I spent almost 8 hours at the recording studio. Of which watching Shahrukh was hardly for a few hrs. Rest of the time being spent in SRK getting ready and makeup for the various looks. Even in that little time, SRK was a true entertainer. Watching a take and retake of the same ad multiple times was enjoyable only due to Shahrukh.
Finally the moment came.  As Gauri Shinde announced "Pack up", SRK proceeded to move out. The people around (mostly from BYJUs) who were watching him from a distance thronged him. People had got DDLJ posters to get his autograph and all. His bodyguards tried to keep people away as they circled around him. I had a notebook in my hand which contained a collection of my poems in 3 languages written for him. The bodyguards thought I was taking his autograph and wanted to drive me away. I just managed a minute to talk to him and told him this is my gift of multilingual poems for him. He opened the notebook, saw my name there and asked "Dhanashree, can I take this?" I still find this absolutely unbelievable. I didn't tell him my name, he opened the notebook while his bodyguards shooed me away, and thanked me. And just in that moment, my husband managed to click a pic. I did not have the time to buy a fancy greeting card, or a fancy notebook, all I had is good content in my usual notebook. That I could give it to SRK and receive his thanks is something I will remember for a lifetime. The collection of my poems for SRK is as follows -

Leadership
To imagine, To dream, To believe
To change ways and embrace the new
To be unafraid and not fear failure
To be passionate about goals, far and near

To inspire the team to move ahead
And be welcoming and inclusive of ideas that come ahead
Having the diligence to execute
And striking a balance between delegation and 'know it all' attitude

To have a plan to achieve the team goals
And yet accept the uncertainties that come in due course
Let the goals not be limiting
But be the milestones to achieve higher

This is what Leadership is all about
As per IIMBUEspeech by SRK , " naam toh suna hi Hoga"

[This poem is based on Shahrukh khan's speech at IIMBUE, the IIMB leadership summit]

Life Lessons

If you want to do something, do it really well
Put in your full effort, do with full JOSH, SRK tells

Maybe put in a bit of madness to your efforts
Taking your aberrations along, be a 'Deewana' of reaching your destination

Maybe  you may fail, sometimes life may be bad
Have faith, have hope
Continue your efforts, you will get the 'Chamatkaar' results in due course

Let 'fear' not intimidate you
Let 'failures' not deter you
The real 'Baazigar' wins even after failures
Chooses not to be held back by his 'Darr' here

It's ok to be confused
It's ok to be worried
"Kabhi Haa, Kabhi Na"
Let life move at its own pace

In all this, be kind, try helping others
Do everything 'Dil Se' spread love to others

Take happiness and sadness in its ephemeral spirit
Live in the present, because you know 'Kal Ho Naa Ho'

Everything will eventually be ok in the end
If it's not ok, it's not the end
Because ' Picture abhi baaki hain doston'

[ Above poem based on Shahrukh Khan's speech at University of Edinburgh]

From your 'Fan'

I thought it was a 'Chamatkaar'
Am I really meeting 'King Khan'?

The 'Deewana' we grew up seeing
Or the 'Baazigar' we watched as kids

The epitome of acting excellence
The Badshaah of Bollywood

Who spans across generations
From 'Ye kaali kaali aankhen' to 'Lungi Dance' hereto

Absolutely thrilled to meet you
My name is Dhanashree, and I am your 'Fan,'
Bas Aapne naam Nahi suna Hoga..

5 saal baad---

Its been 5 years since I graduated from IIM Bangalore. It was exactly on 1st April 2013 that I was convocated and 2 weeks back I could see a flood of picture posts on my facebook timeline depicting convocation pictures. It was a throwback in time. I remembered the CAT prep, the congratulatory letter from IIM Bangalore, the first day, the 2 years that went by and the convocation. It felt like everything went by so fast. Lot of people ask me, is the IIM MBA worth it? Is there a return on investment? To this, I have no direct answer. Let me tell you what this MBA taught me or meant to me. I made/met some really amazing friends in IIM Bangalore. People who were not only brilliant in academics, but also excelled in sports, arts or the likes. People who despite all this were humble.  Let me tell you, I am yet to find one dumb student in IIM Bangalore. People who had to repeat a year just had to because the system of relative grading means bottom 5% in  x number of subjects qualifies as fail. But they had some amazing ideas too.

I met people who came from remote villages of India, whose parents were not as economically well off, who came due to their persistence and merit. People who studied in vernacular medium till class 10 but who did extremely well. People who had hardly ventured outside their hometown and college town, but had amazing ideas. IIM brought all these diverse bunch of people together. It made  the world flat for the rich guy and the poor guy, for a city bred guy and a remote village guy  , it gave them an equal chance. It showed merit matters, it is a living example of making it big despite all odds. If anyone feels today whether putting their kid in a smaller school deters their chances for a good degree, I can show you many examples of IIM grads coming from small places.

The faculty was equally amazing. Faculty who despite their global degrees would talk so nicely and mostly devoid of ego. Some of them being on boards of banks etc but will talk to you as a friend when you meet them even now. Extremely well read people who you can have a sensible conversation about almost any topic.

In terms of monetary return of investment, I have no right answer whether IIM gives ROI or not. Because again this answer is time and person dependent. But I am sure , IIM gives a worth to remember experience to everybody. Of meeting and studying with some of the best people in the country who come from varied socio economic backgrounds. This is something to cherish and worth to remember for a lifetime.

And hence I feel , IIM fee increase should be rationalized at some point. It should not deter any meritorious student from pursuing the IIM dream. Because if that happens, IIM would remain a rich man’s dream which would defeat the main purpose of this diverse experience.

With this I end the post..

Cheers to IIM B times!

Its my husband's birthday today. As a gift to him sharing a poem that I made about our story

Jab Chiku met Anushka

A poem dedicated to Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma's wedding ..

It all started with a shampoo
Much more than washing your hair, it can do

Chiku and Anushka met on a shampoo ad set
"Dil Dhadakne Do" their hearts said

In sports , "You win some, You lose some", it is said
For Chiku's loss, Anushka was blamed instead

"Jab tak hain jaan, she will support me", Chiku said
Silenced his critics, moved with his life ahead

"Band Baaja Baarat" left for Italy
Chiku and Anushka got married happily

"Chiku ho Gaya uska ", cried many hearts
"Rab ne bana di Jodi" thus a new relationship starts

Here's wishing Virushka happy times ahead

Of flight delays and Bollywood songs

Flight and delays have become synonymous. Anybody who travels regularly can vouch for this fact irrespective of the airline he travels with. So what can you say when your flight is delayed?Let's remember the great Shammi Kapoor and sing " Aaja Aaja main hoon passenger Tera.." Presenting to you the twisted version of the song aaja aaja main hoon pyaar tera from the movie Teesri Manzil. For best effect listen to the song and read this lyrics . So here you go- what will you sing to the flight when it gets delayed

Today is Hindi day , a day celebrated annually on 14th September in India. Hindi Divas is celebrated on 14 September because on this day in 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India had adopted Hindi written in Devanagari script as the official language of the Republic of India.[source- wiki]. I remember my mom had to give a lot of Hindi exams in office as there was a push to have official communication not only in English but also in Hindi. I studied Hindi till class 10. While in school, I gave state level Hindi exams and stood first in Mumbai in one of them too. But now I have lost touch. Been ages since I have written something in Hindi. My spoken Hindi is also Bambaiyya Hindi.Today though I wanted to write something in Hindi. Hence the following- a bit of background below!
I was thinking about the traffic situation in big cities. The situation is so pathetic that sometimes you have no idea whether you will reach office in 1 hr or 3 hrs. When I was thinking of this, I thought of altering the lyrics of Hindi song "Tere Ghar Ke saamne" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26qczSkLip8) to describe the plight of an employee stuck in traffic and travelling long distances. I am sure many of you can relate!
